IoT Evolution Expo Florida 2016 Keynote: Managing the IoT Traffic Jam
02/17/2016
On this IoT Time, Ken shames you if you not planning to be at the IoT Evolution Expo next week in Ft Lauderdale, tells you all about the first-ever IoT Evolution Awards and exhorts you to make sure you follow up with the best-in-class providers that win.
01/22/2016
In this IoT Time, Ken says Happy New Year, misses David Bowie, and runs down the tech from CES that had an actual function. In his MyIoT segment, he applauds those few and proud developers who understand that 2016 will be the year of actual function in the IoT. It’s time to stop merely monitoring and get on to functioning.
01/12/2016
In this IoT Time, Ken looks into a set of surveys by myDevices in which they examine Americans’ interest in automated Smart Home technology and Star Wars tech. Some key findings: folks want housework to be automatic, and would rather own a hover bike than a light saber from the Star Wars universe. And they are incorrect.
12/10/2015
On this IoT Time, Ken talks about IBM’s new Bluemix Mod for accessing the 70 percent of unleveraged data just floating out there, unleveraged. He also dips into a discussion of how and why storing data in the cloud is safer than keeping it on your local servers. Cloud City, baby.
12/09/2015
In this IoT Time, Ken calls for better IoT security, but says it can’t be bolted on, and it can’t be by locking all the functions and data up on local devices. That kind of approach will never build the consumer and user confidence needed to keep the IoT afloat. No, instead there needs to be security built in from the ground up.
12/08/2015
On this IoT Time, Ken can barely speak intelligibly (let alone intelligently), but he gives some applause to Ingenu for aiming to connect the U.S. and SAP for working all over the world to build Smart City infrastructure solutions and issues a call to action to governments and municipalities to provide the will for urban connectivity and implores academics, developers and inventors to create new, purpose-built solutions for Smart Cities, because tacking new ideas onto old tech is just short-sighted.
12/03/2015
There are two IoTs: consumer and industrial. The Consumer IoT is where most people understand what’s going on: smart homes, wearables, drones, devices and connected cars. The Industrial IoT is the home of the infrastructure enhancements, intelligent buildings and cities and dirty underbelly of the connected world that makes it all work, and can make a real difference in the future of humanity. They have a lot to learn from each other, and it’s time we all started recognizing that.

Wearable Tech Expo Las Vegas 2015 Keynote: Intel Security
09/14/2015
In the IoTTime news today, Altair Semiconductor has teamed up with Verizon Wireless for the development of LTE-based, commercial IoT products, including a cellular-enabled device with better than a decade of battery life. ATT has launched a dedicated Smart Cities Initiative and, in connected transportation, and teamed up with Jaguar Land Rover North America to connect that company’s cars to the IoT. Finally Cubic Telecom is working with HP to rock the Connected Car Experience for and epic CapetoCape Race. In MyIoT, Ken says more tech like Cubic’s needs to come to the forefront of the IoT. This platform that lets one device connect locally to any cellular data network is huge and has far-reaching potential. Let’s have more, please.
09/11/2015
On this IoTTime, partnerships lead the news. Samsung, LG and SK Telecom join forces to unite their connected home platforms in Korea. IMS introduces DriveSync, an telematics platform for connected home, car and lifestyle solutions. On-Ramp rebrands and relaunches as Ingenu with the lofty goal of building a national IoT connectivity network called Machine Network. On MyIoT, Ken hails this development as a positive sign for the future of the IoT. He says it’s critical for this kind of network to be ubiquitous and all-encompassing in order to make the IoT an ever-present feature of consumer and industrial lives.

A successful organization starts with its people. This has long been the philosophy of Joe Gibbs. It helped carry him to three Super Bowl championships as the Pro Football Hall of Fame as head coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins and has been a defining principle behind building Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) into one of NASCAR's most successful multi-team racing organizations. It also guides Gibbs' latest project: "Game Plan For Life", which is the title of his New York Times Best Selling book and corresponding ministry (www.gameplanforlife.com). JGR has experienced amazing success and growth since Gibbs founded the operation in 1991.

The IoT Evolution Expo at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas might be over, but the impact of all the sessions, strategy discussions and exhibit hall meetings will resound throughout the industry all year. In today’s IoT Time, we talked about the findings of our Security Summit, who won the Battle of the Platforms and the AT&T Fast Pitch competitions, and what the IoT is really all about. In MyIoT, I call for the establishment of a global standards body for the IoT, soon. Because without it, the industry will never grow cohesively, and will never be truly accepted by the mass of consumers.

In today’s IoT Time, Essence releases a consumer study that reveals users’ preferences in connected home technology, Qualcomm buys CSR and The Guardian reports that Google’s been working with NASA to get around FAA rules on commercial drone testing. In MyIoT, Ken lets us know that he’s on Google’s side here and tells the FAA to stop wasting time and resources on enforcing a ban when they should be encouraging testing and regulating for safety.

On today’s IoT Time: Wearables are going to become ubiquitous, but only once they get better. Android OS had a huge hole in its biometric security protocols, but they fixed it. Machine learning is required to make Big Data smarter. On MYIoT, Ken digs into the idea that people aren’t equipped to analyze raw data themselves. We need smart algorithms and machines that can learn and deliver the actionable intelligence businesses can use to make better strategic moves.

Today in IoT news: Microsoft releases Windows 10 for the IoT, Nokia launches developer’s conference, and a new pill tracker makes pharmaceuticals safer. Meanwhile, Ken thinks we’ve all had about enough of hearing about how many trillions of dollars the IoT might be worth in 10 years. It’s time to stop navel gazing and get to work building solutions like the TruTag that will help the mass of consumers see the IoT not as a novelty that’s out to steal their private data, but an important developing area of technology that will transform their lives for the better. Also, don’t forget to register for IoT Evolution Expo, if you haven’t yet.
